We kick off with a few practice pop-ups on the sand, jumping from belly to feet in what should be one smooth movement but, in my case, looks more like an artless wombat-style scramble. It’s my first-ever surf lesson and Rip Curl’s new CEO, Brooke Farris, has brought me to the reassuringly named Cosy Corner at the south end of the Torquay front beach there’s barely a ripple on the sea below. By the time I hit the beach, I’m already half-knackered from squeezing myself, neck-to-ankle, into a sausage skin of neoprene.
